About ISKRA

Iskra, meaning spark in Croatian, was more than a newsletter. For Valentina Krčmar, it was a source of comfort, reflection, and purpose during a difficult period in her life. Through this newsletter, she channelled her emotions and hopes for her homeland into words that resonated deeply with Canadian Croatian readers.

Through Iskra, Valentina found her voice as a writer. The publication became an intimate space where she could explore themes of identity, love, loss, and the enduring strength of the Croatian spirit. Each issue reflected her deep empathy, her intellectual curiosity, and her unwavering belief in truth and justice.

Valentina describes Iskra as her “heart’s satisfaction,” a creative refuge that brought her peace and purpose when life itself felt heavy. Over time, it became much more than that; it became her legacy. Within its pages lives the spark of Valentina’s courage, faith, and enduring love for her people and her homeland.
